What is the prostate?

The prostate is a gland that surrounds the male uretha and helps produce semen, the fluid that carries sperm.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is a disease that affects men, usually in middle age or later. In this disease, cells in the prostate become abnormal, multiply without control, and form a tumor.

How common is prostate cancer?

About 1 in 7 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some time during their life. More than 60 percent of prostate cancers are diagnosed after age 65, and the disorder is rare before age 40.

Sometimes, prostate cancer symptoms can be confused with non-cancerous issues.

It’s true! An enlarged prostate is common in men over age 50—and may be causing these symptoms—without being cancerous.

SCREENING
RECOMMENDATIONS

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends that men ages 55 to 69 years discuss the possible benefits and harms of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening with their health care provider and make an individualized decision about whether to get screened.
